How to make a GIRLBAND
A short story by Those Three Girls
Those Three Girls became friends at drama school and while we always made one another laugh, we dreamed of a future where we would make lots of other people laugh with our comedy gold. In early 2012 we took classes in comedy writing at City Lit, picking up the nickname ‘the girlband’, as we always sat together (we’re scared of strangers).
In Summer 2012 we wrote and performed GIRLBAND as an hour-long stage show. After rave reviews, the crowds going wild and calling out for more, we adapted that show into a sitcom.
In 2013 we won The Sitcom Mission… the X-Factor of sitcom competitions. Yay us!
In 2014 we filmed some snippets of GIRLBAND and turned our 15 page award-winning script into a full 30 minute pilot episode whilst we waited for fame and fortune to happen… or not.
In 2015, after meetings with agents and production companies who had read and enjoyed our award-winning sitcom script but didn’t really ‘get it’, we decided we wanted to film the pilot episode ourselves and show them the vision that we could see so clearly.
We enlisted the help of our super awesome producer Lucy Fazey and our amazing director Luke Graham and came up with a plan of action.
In July 2015 we launched our Kickstarter campaign to help raise the funds we needed to film a pilot. If we didn’t hit our target of £5,000, we stood to walk away with nothing: no money, no pilot. We needn’t have worried, as thanks to our super generous T3G super-fans we smashed our fundraising target! GIRLBAND – Episode 1: The Web, was happening.
In September 2015 we held a rehearsed reading of GIRLBAND at the Canal Café Theatre to see how a live audience reacted to the script. We knew we were comedy legends in our own minds but would the outside world think we were funny too…!?! We gave the audience a Q&A session after the show and handed out anonymous feedback forms… and it turned out we had some way to go. Armed with the incredibly useful constructive criticism from that night, our real work began.
Rewrite after rewrite, we toured the script round London Writers Nights, searching for further feedback. We held table reads, swapped accents, changed ages, dropped comedy glasses, dumped imaginary boyfriends (had a real life baby) all in the quest of comedy gold.
In 2016 we cast our fabulous actors Ruth, Owain and Michael. Our producer Lucy secured the services of a host of brilliant crew members and creatives, and finally… our GIRLBAND team was formed. We went location-hunting for the perfect filming venue, learnt our lines, rehearsed, dressed the set, ate a lot of bacon sandwiches and filmed the pilot. Four years of hard work and it was all over in four days!
In 2017 the pilot was edited and colour graded, the sound was designed, titles and credits were added and now… today is finally the day that we can show all our lovely Kickstarter supporters, cast, crew, creatives, family and friends the sitcom pilot they have all been waiting for!
TODAY IS GIRLBAND DAY!
It’s been a long but incredibly fun journey and we’re so grateful for the love, generosity and support you have all given us over the years but hopefully, this is just the beginning…
After all… we’re GIRLBAND ‘til we die.
See you at the screening!
