We are a couple of rewrites in to the pilot episode of our new sitcom, Ivy View, so we have been attending writers nights to hear how our script is reading aloud and more importantly… see if it gets any laughs. Eek!
We are lucky to know some lovely people who run amazingly friendly groups offering a free supportive network to writers. They offer lots of useful feedback, constructive criticism and cake.
It is a really useful (if not a little scary) exercise to try and gauge what’s working well and what isn’t. It never goes the way you anticipate. Usually, the jokes you thought were funny fall flat and people chuckle away at what you perceived to be the least amusing moment. We came away with bag loads of ideas as to how the script could be tweaked and found the whole process our sharing our work highly valuable.
If you are a writer and feel you would benefit from a writers night, we highly recommend The South London Women Writers’ (BAME) Group and the North London Writers’ Group. Actors looking to brush up on their sight reading or producers, directors, artistic directors looking to network and make connections are also more than welcome to attend. We will definitely be back at a later date with our rewrites.
